Today’s Lenten Word Meditation comes from John 1:29-34 NRSV:
29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ 31I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The word, testified, in this passage in Greek is martureo, which means to be a witness, to bear witness, testify.  I chose this word because it is a language that many associate with evangelicals.  I know in my evangelical past at a Korean American mission church I have testified/witnessed to strangers and overseas about Jesus, especially about the heaven/hell part.

Today, I sit with the word, testify, and hold it and pray.  I wonder if I still testify about Jesus?  And the answer is YES (FPCLA style!) especially lately among Christian circles…in my DMin program, in the PCUSA, in the DoC, to my family, to strangers…but not the way I did in the past.  Now I testify that we are ALL God’s holy people and that God loves all especially those who are marginalized like the homeless, asylum seekers, women, the LGBTQIA+ community, etc.  During this time of Lent, I tell people that Jesus sacrificed himself for his love of God and people.

Testifying is a reflection of my faith…my belief in God…my love for Jesus.

Do you testify/witness in your faith journey?
